SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL SURVEY OPENED MON. NOV. 3

    Dear families,

Portland Public Schools begins the annual Successful Schools Survey on Monday. The Successful Schools Survey is an opportunity for students, staff, and families to provide important feedback on their school environments, learning experiences, and sense of well-being and safety at school.

The survey is conducted once every school year to provide timely information to schools, district leadership, and the community, allowing us to make informed decisions about school climate and culture. This year, the survey window is open November 3 to December 8.

Portland Public Schools highly values the input and opinions of its families, and we welcome all PPS parents and guardians to complete this year’s survey. We use the data to help improve our schools, providing targeted feedback and training on how to create healthy school environments that are welcoming for all.

You can complete the Successful Schools Survey online using the link provided below. Please complete one survey per household. If you have more than one student at PPS, we ask that you complete the survey considering the experiences of your eldest child.

The survey will take approximately 15-30 minutes to complete and is available in English, Spanish, Russian, Somali, Vietnamese and Chinese.

HOSTING SPANISH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH ANDEGO

Last year several families hosted Spanish middle school students for a month.  It was an incredibly rewarding cultural experience and several even chose to visit their host student the following summer in Spain.  We have the opportunity to host students at Sellwood MS again this year.   If your family is interested in hosting a Spanish student from January 17-February 15, 2026, see the attached flyer and apply to host!  There is no cost to you nor does your family need to speak Spanish to host.

    Sellwood Principal's Newsletter - October 24, 2025

NOTE:  There is a problem with the 'more' link, so the full newsletter is posted here.  The alignment also has some problems.  The district is launching a new website soon.

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

It was great to see many of you showing up to support our PTA and having some fun at our new fundraiser, Monster Mayhem.  The MCs did an outstanding job, and the performances were outstanding. I hope it will become an annual tradition. See more about the Monster Mayhem event in the PTA blurb below.

Next week, I will be hosting a morning principal coffee on Tuesday, in the library, from 8:30-9:30.  It is a great opportunity to discuss topics of parent interest in an informal setting.

Also, a reminder that Wednesday is the end of the 1st quarter, and there will be no school for students on Thursday and Friday of next week.

Although there will be no school for students on Halloween, we anticipate some students will wear costumes on Wednesday.  Here are the guidelines for what is allowed and what is not.

    Halloween Guidance

    • No masks or costumes that cover the face, including full face paint.

    • No props/toys/accessories - especially no fake weapons.

    • No large, bulky, or inflatable costumes.

    • No costumes that perpetuate a stereotype of someone's culture, gender, heritage, or religion.

    • No drug or alcohol references.

    • No wheels.

    • Please, leave candy at home.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandre Carbone

    Sellwood Middle School Principal

  • Student Filmmakers Showcase Their Monster Talent

The assignment their teacher gave them was simple – make a short film that begins with a phone call and ends with someone hanging up. Benson first-year students Dylan Martinez-Torres and Dariel Soriano Zamora ran it all the way to a small city populated by two very big and rather iconic monsters – Godzilla and Hedora.

The result, Sorry, Wrong Number, is one of the more than 90 films entered into the annual Best of PPS Film Festival. The festival is a celebration of exceptional student filmmaking that includes a showcase at the historic Hollywood Theatre.

The fourth annual installment of the festival took place on May 21 and included a screening of 13 standout films. The films came from all over PPS and ran the gamut from Dylan and Dariel’s monster short to documentaries, film noir, and broadcast journalism.
