Dear Families,
What a wonderful start to the school year we’ve had together! I want to thank everyone who joined us for Back to School Night and our first PTA meeting of the year. The turnout was fantastic, and it was so energizing to see our community come together in support of our students and staff. Your presence and involvement make such a difference, and we are grateful for the partnership we share in helping every child thrive.
Follow along in our bi-weekly newsletters for important announcements about things that are up and coming around our building. Next week we will have our first lockdown drill for the school year. Messaging was included in our last newsletter, however I wanted to remind you all that teachers prepare students ahead of each drill, explaining what to expect and reminding them that drills are practice, not emergencies. We partner closely with the PPS Safety Department and follow the I Love U Guys Standard Response Protocol, a nationally recognized framework for school safety. There are numerous helpful resources available through our district to inform families about emergency preparedness. If you ever have questions or concerns about safety, please reach out to me, your child’s teacher, or the school office. We are always happy to talk with you.
As we move further into the school year, I am filled with excitement and optimism. Our classrooms are already buzzing with learning, laughter, and new routines, and our students are off to a strong start. With the support of our dedicated families and staff, I know this will be a year full of growth, success, and joyful moments for our entire school community.
With appreciation,
Dr. Roberti

Morning Drop - Off
We have heard the parent concerns in the community and have made changes to our morning route with buses. Moving forward - we need your help! Please remember to maintain the drop-off procedures. See the procedures and map below.
Drop-off Procedure:
Students may be dropped off in the designated drop-off areas ONLY. To avoid congestion, aim to drop your student off at 7:45.
For Everyone's Safety:
-
DO NOT allow a student to exit the vehicle in the driving lanes of the road or anywhere other than the designated drop-off areas or the parking areas.
-
DO NOT park in the drop off lane and get out of your car
-
DO NOT make a U-turn at any time
-
DO NOT leave the drop-off lane before the vehicle in front of you leaves unless it is a bus.
-
DO NOT park in the area south of the bus unloading area or in the bus unloading area.
-
DO NOT drop off a student on SW 51st Ave on the east side of the school property.
-
DO NOT enter the West Hills Friends Church parking lot from SW 53rd Ave.
-
DO NOT walk through the West Hills Friends Church parking lot. Use pedestrian paths.
Thank you for all of your patience and help, there has been many changes this year!

Help the community - complete this quick survey!
As part of the Modernization effort, we’re exploring the possibility of adding a school-based health center at Ida B. Wells High School that could better serve school age children in the Southwest Community. A school-based health center provides services just like a regular doctor’s office. Your feedback here will help us in this process.
We’ve created a very short survey (2–3 minutes) to help us understand your experience accessing healthcare and what services would be helpful at a potential clinic.
IBWHS Potential School-Based Health Center
The more responses we receive, the stronger the case we can make. We’d be so grateful if you could fill out the survey and share it with families and other members at your school.
Thank you for helping us build something truly responsive to our community’s needs!

Safe Routes to School
This school year, our partners at the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will paint or repaint “no parking” zones on curbs near Maplewood Elementary to improve visibility at crosswalks and intersections. These yellow-painted curbs will extend 20 feet from each crosswalk, and vehicles are not permitted to stop or park in these areas.

Buses
This week students practiced their bus safety PPS STOPPS drills. Please see the videos and documents below for more information about how our students can be safe on and around our buses.

Parent Square
After users are added to ParentSquare by the school or district, they will receive all messages from the school even if they have not registered their account. However, users need to register their account to participate in two-way communication features.
If you have not already, there are three ways a user can register their ParentSquare account:
- Click the activation link in an email or text (click here for notification examples.)
- Sign in to ParentSquare https://www.parentsquare.com/signin using the contact information (email or phone number) that matches the data in ParentSquare.
- Click the link in a post or message.
Users who did not register previously in response to an invitation, will be asked to register the first time they click on a link to sign in or sign up. For example, if an unregistered parent/guardian receives a post with parent-teacher conference sign ups, clicking the link to sign up for the conference will first lead them through the process of registering their ParentSquare account.

We're working on throwing and catching in PE! The weather is great to take your child outside and throw a ball around! The cues I'm using for an underhand throw are swing, step (with the opposite foot) and throw. For an overhead throw we use the cues of side to target, throwing arm in an uppercase L, step, TWIST throw. Yay!

Welcome back. It is wonderful to see students again and watch great books go home in their hands.
Never hesitate to contact me about missing or damaged books, helping to connect your child to books they will love, or drop in and select books for your family to use at home (pre-arrange with me)!
Please encourage your child to keep their books in their backpack when not reading them, so the books are ready for library day!

Yearly verifications are DUE by September 30th! If you have not already completed the yearly verification for your students buy 9/30/25, you will not be able to access your ParentVUE until it is completed. Please let the office know if you are having issues with parentVUE and we will help.
Teachers will be taking attendance at 8:00am. If your student will get to their classroom any time past 8:00am please have them stop by the office for a pass.
Volunteers and Visitors
You must stop by the office and sign in to our RAPTOR system. Please ensure that your background checks have been completed and are not expired. Be sure to bring your ID's as we will be scanning them into our system. Please help us make Maplewood safe by all volunteers signing in, wearing a name badge with their name and signing out. Office staff are here to help you. THANK YOU!
If your child is enrolled in any after school activities or aftercare and they will be absent from them for any reason please reach out to your contact for that club, class or activity and let them know your child will be absent. This will save the office panicked calls from these organizations when they are missing a child!
If you need to notify the office about your child's dismissal or absence, please be sure to email both of the Office Admins or call the office. This will ensure that your child's teacher gets the message of the excused absence or after school plans.
Please be sure to call and not email dismissal changes, if after 12:00pm as the office gets busy at the end of the day and we may not see an email.

If your child has an allergy or other medical issue that may require meal accommodations I need a form filled out. It is the Meal Accommodation form on this page: https://or01913224.schoolwires.net/Page/2481.
There are also meal preference forms on that page. Those forms are for someone who is a vegetarian or someone who cannot eat pork, not someone with a medical condition need. Please email or call me if you have any questions or concerns.

Hello Maplewood Community!
My name is Heather Jones and I am your PTA Volunteer Coordinator. You will hear from me throughout the year with calls for help and congratulations when things have gone well. The Maplewood community truly thrives with our volunteer support and we are excited to have everyone help however you are able!
There are a few steps to our volunteer process at Maplewood, so here's what you need to know...
- Please visit maplewoodpta.com/volunteer and click the PPS webpage link to complete your background check. Make sure to bring your ID to the office the first time you come in to volunteer so the secretaries can get set up in the system.
- While you are on the maplewoodpta.com/volunteer page go ahead and fill out our volunteer survey. This information helps me connect you to the people or groups you are most interested in helping at Maplewood. This is not a commitment of any kind, just informational.
- Stay on that page; maplewoodpta.com/volunteer and check out our signup page to see all the currently available opportunities for volunteering!

Lunch/Recess Update:
In addition to our current signups, you can come help during lunch/recess time! At this time there is no need to sign up for specific days, just come into the office, sign in and head to the cafeteria. If you volunteer for lunch please consider staying for recess or at least helping to transition the kids to recess. Please email me if you would like the full lunch/recess schedule and/or more information.
11:00am - Kinder & 2nd, 11:25am - 1st & 4th, 11:50am - 3rd & 5th
And finally we are looking for some volunteers interested in taking on some lead roles for a few events and committees. You will not be alone, there is always help to be had and blueprints to work off of, so please don't feel like you're going in blind. We are hoping to find someone to head up our staff appreciation committee, anyone interested in learning from our amazing Carnival team and hopefully taking a leadership role after this year, anyone interested in joining our amazing auction team (planning, decoration, procurement; endless opportunities) and anyone interesting in joining our growing garden committee (our lead has some exciting ideas for this year and beyond).
Please reach out with any questions, I am here to help you get connected!
