    PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

    Dear Atkinson Families,

I’m writing to share our ongoing efforts to support strong student attendance. Attendance truly matters. Every day, teachers introduce new lessons, and classmates create new memories together. Each school day is an opportunity for students to learn, connect, and build the important lifelong habit of showing up.

Recent research shows that many parents underestimate how many days their child has missed and how those absences affect learning and social growth. We want you to have accurate, up-to-date information, because when students miss school, they often struggle to keep up academically and may feel less connected to their peers, routines, and classroom community.

If you’re unsure how many absences your child has this year, you can check their attendance record on ParentVUE. Students who have missed more than six days fall into the “chronic absence” category.

Since the pandemic, many educators have noticed that families feel more comfortable taking time away from school for vacations or trips—a trend reflected nationwide. According to Education Week, about 15% of students were chronically absent before the pandemic (2018–19), compared with 28% in the 2022–23 school year. While attendance is improving, it still has not returned to pre-COVID levels.

At Atkinson, 33% of our students were chronically absent last year. This year, we’ve made meaningful progress: currently, fewer than 19% of our students fall into that category. However, we also know attendance rates tend to decline as the year progresses.

Our team is proactively reaching out to families when attendance becomes a concern so we can offer support, share information, and help address any barriers that may be getting in the way. We are also recognizing students and families who maintain or improve their attendance through letters, assemblies, and awards.

If you’re considering a vacation during the school year, we ask that you please reconsider. Family time is incredibly valuable, but even a few missed days of instruction can disrupt learning and make it harder for students to stay connected with their classmates. Every day in school builds on the one before it. When students attend regularly, they keep pace academically, feel more confident, strengthen friendships, and feel supported by their teachers and peers.

We truly understand the importance of family experiences, and we encourage you to plan travel during school breaks whenever possible. By making attendance a priority, you help your child grow academically, socially, and emotionally—and you reinforce the lifelong habit that showing up consistently and on time opens the door to learning, connection, and success.

  • Student Filmmakers Showcase Their Monster Talent

The assignment their teacher gave them was simple – make a short film that begins with a phone call and ends with someone hanging up. Benson first-year students Dylan Martinez-Torres and Dariel Soriano Zamora ran it all the way to a small city populated by two very big and rather iconic monsters – Godzilla and Hedora.

The result, Sorry, Wrong Number, is one of the more than 90 films entered into the annual Best of PPS Film Festival. The festival is a celebration of exceptional student filmmaking that includes a showcase at the historic Hollywood Theatre.

The fourth annual installment of the festival took place on May 21 and included a screening of 13 standout films. The films came from all over PPS and ran the gamut from Dylan and Dariel’s monster short to documentaries, film noir, and broadcast journalism.
