  • Vestal's 2nd Annual Arts Showcase

    Español| Tiếng Việt| 中文| Soomaali| Русский

Join us on December 10 for an evening of performances, art, and refreshments as we celebrate the creativity and hard work of our Vestal students! Performances will take place throughout the night in the auditorium at the following times:

    - Kindergarten/1st Grade: 5:15 pm
    - 2nd/3rd Grade: 5:45 pm
    - 4th/5th Grade: 6:15 pm

In partnership with the PTA, we will host a silent auction to help fund this event. Stop by the auction table to support the arts at Vestal and take home a piece of our school’s art history — the beautiful mirrored tiles that have decorated our walls for more than a decade.

If you are interested/available to volunteer to help make this evening run smoothly, please fill out the volunteer form at this link: https://forms.gle/CgQjcYwfrHnqy67g9

We hope to see you there!

    Creatively Yours,
    Mr. Williams and Ms. Breaux

    November Art Spotlight

Hello Vestal Community! In art class, grades K-4 have been completing projects that highlight the formal art element of Line. Kindergarten students created line compositions, then used watercolor to make their lines really stand out. Kindergarten students are also beginning to learn about and experiment with primary color mixing. First through fourth grade students have created beautiful leaves, adding line and pattern with crayon, then painting with watercolor to practice the wax resist technique. Third and fourth graders discussed warm/cool color combinations to really showcase their leaf drawings with paint. Fourth grade students are also learning about the watercolor technique called “wet on wet” painting this week. They are really enjoying the exciting possibilities with this method of painting. Fifth grade students are finally finishing their product spoof stuffies, which will be displayed in the building asap!

As mentioned in October’s Art Spotlight, The HeArt of Portland poster contest is open to all PPS students; we have talked about the theme in 4th and 5th grade classes, and some students are very interested (and have started their designs). Because class time is limited, I have included a link with details about the theme (Windows to Our Future) and submission requirements and deadline. In short, the submissions require:

    • No text

    • Bright colors (suggested)

    • 9”x12” format

The deadline is 12/5 (I mistakenly said 12/9 in the last Spotlight).

I am happy to send some supplies (markers, 9x12” paper, etc.) to students who would like to work on this at home. I will be checking in with students about this, but please feel free to reach out if you have any questions after reading the link below:

2026 HeART of Portland Thematic Statement | Windows of Our Future

Mr. Williams and I are excited about the Vestal Winter Arts Showcase on Wednesday, 12/10. The flyer will be sent out this week with more details!

Finally, as a part-time teacher, I am only available to meet with families for one evening during conferences. I will be in the art portable (P3, next to the playground). Please stop by if you have time before or after evening conferences; I will have an “open house” from 4-7 pm on Monday, 11/24.

    Best to everyone,

    Laura Breaux

  • Student Filmmakers Showcase Their Monster Talent

The assignment their teacher gave them was simple – make a short film that begins with a phone call and ends with someone hanging up. Benson first-year students Dylan Martinez-Torres and Dariel Soriano Zamora ran it all the way to a small city populated by two very big and rather iconic monsters – Godzilla and Hedora.

The result, Sorry, Wrong Number, is one of the more than 90 films entered into the annual Best of PPS Film Festival. The festival is a celebration of exceptional student filmmaking that includes a showcase at the historic Hollywood Theatre.

The fourth annual installment of the festival took place on May 21 and included a screening of 13 standout films. The films came from all over PPS and ran the gamut from Dylan and Dariel’s monster short to documentaries, film noir, and broadcast journalism.
