Hello BEH Panthers!!
Last week was a busy week for our upper grades, as 3rd-5th grade had two assemblies and a field trip. It was great to see them enjoy the Tubman Advanced Band and Dance teams last week and to hear them share about all that they saw at the Art Museum.
This week the whole school has two assemblies and first grade is going on a field trip. At Wednesday's assembly we will be focusing on students who have been demonstrating our core values over the past month and then on Friday, we will recognize those students with 100% attendance for the month of January and those with the most improved attendance for the month.
Additionally, we will be reviewing our staffing projections with staff, our Site Council, and PTA this week. As you have likely heard, there is another budget shortfall for next year and there will be cuts across the district. We are just finding out how that will impact BEH for next year and we will be working to strategize how to best support our community given the shifts.
See below to learn more about upcoming events and info for the week(s) ahead:

Attendance Update: Cookies, Celebrations, and Showing Up!
We are working hard to make every day count here at BEH! As you already know, improving our school-wide attendance is a major goal for us this year, and we need your help to make it happen.
Here is what’s happening this week:
-
Last Week’s Success: It was fantastic seeing so many students at our gloves attendance pop-up last week. We love seeing students wearing their blue and/or yellow gloves.
-
This Week’s Surprise Pop-Up: We are keeping the momentum going! We have another surprise pop-up happening sometime this week. Students who are present on that day will receive a free cookie just for showing up!
-
Monthly Assembly This Friday: We will wrap up the week with our Monthly Attendance Assembly. We will be celebrating students with consistent attendance and giving a special shout-out to those with the most improved attendance.
Thank you for making school a priority. We can’t wait to see you (and share a cookie with you) this week!

TAG Info:
If you had the chance to fill out the TAG Family Survey, we appreciate your input. If you haven’t had a chance to fill out the survey, there is still time: TAG Family Survey. This survey is for all PPS families.
The Single Subject Acceleration - Math process application window begins March 1st.
This process is open to 2nd - 4th grade students. The process outlined in the PPS administrative directive on acceleration and on the TAG Website, allows students who qualify to accelerate through the next grade level. This is a rigorous process with only 14% of students qualifying for SSA-M in 2024 - 25. It is important to talk with your students' teacher to determine if your student might be a good candidate for SSA-M. Strong candidates are students who have met the standards of their current grade level and are proficient on a paper/pencil assessment administered at schools under the guidance of the TAG Department.
The decision to accelerate students is made by the TAG Department, with input from teachers, a variety of district administered assessments and the paper/pencil assessment. The timeline for SSA-M:
March 1 - 31st applications accepted via the TAG Website
April 1 - 30th evaluation process
May 31st family notification
June 1 - 30th appeals process
July 1st family notification
For questions regarding your student’s potential for SSA-M, please contact your student’s teacher. For questions regarding the SSA-M process, please contact the TAG Department at ppstag@pps.net.
The ACCESS Academy application lottery opens on Feb 18th. For more information please visit the ACCESS Academy website.

All essays are due by March 6th to provide students time to read the book and write the essay.

5th Grade is reading Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds

Looking for more Amazing Library Volunteers:
The library needs volunteers who are willing to commit to volunteering at least once a week. It doesn’t have to be the same day every week. There are big jobs that could use some willing hands. We have labels that need to be changed, books that need repairing, signs to put on display, shelves that need reorganizing, books that need to be covered, and a library that needs some sprucing. If any of these sound interesting, please contact Mrs. McKay and Ms. Jenn through ParentSquare or email. Mrs. McKay will be available to train volunteers on Friday mornings, 8:30 am-10 am, or after school on Thursdays and Fridays.

The Great Library Book Hunt:
We are having a schoolwide hunt for lost books. Currently, there are 1800 lost books. We are encouraging students to look for them all over the school and at home. The rewards will be schoolwide, and the students will be voting on them next week. For every 450 books returned, they will get a reward. With each increment, the reward gets bigger. Please support your student in looking at home, and we will support them in looking here.
