Academic Eligibility Standards

  • OSAA Academic Standards Requirements

    In order to meet academic eligibility standards for participation in OSAA programs, a student must meet the following:

    • Pass five subjects the previous semester, equivalent to 2.5 credits (OSAA)
    • Be enrolled and passing at least five subjects (2.5 credits) in the current semester (OSAA)
    • Pass all subjects or receive a 2.0 GPA the previous grading period (quarter, semester). Summer school or alternate grades will be credited when the next transcript is issued.
    • Students not meeting OSAA requirements, by rule, are INELIGIBLE for the entire semester.

    Satisfactory Progress Toward Graduation

    In addition to the specific credit requirement identified in OSAA Rule 8.1.2., to be scholastically eligible, a student must also be making satisfactory progress toward the school’s graduation requirements as determined by the District by having earned a minimum of credits, as indicated on the chart below, by the beginning of the specified year.

    Please note: it is recommended that students enroll in more than the minimum number of classes each semester to ensure they meet satisfactory progress toward degree requirements as outlined in the above chart.

     

    Homeschool Students

    (a) Minimum Test Score.  A home school student who transfers to a public or private school may establish initial academic eligibility by achieving a minimum score on any adopted achievement test pursuant to ORS 339.035.  The student shall achieve a minimum composite test score that places the student at or above the 23rd percentile based on national norms.

    (b) Test Deadline.  The achievement test must be completed prior to August 15th each school year.

    (c) Work Sample Alternative.  In the absence of achievement test results submitted by the deadline of August 15 each school year, a school district may adopt alternative requirements including but not limited to a requirement that a student submit a portfolio of work samples to a school district committee for review to determine whether a student is eligible to participate in interscholastic activities (MUST BE CLEARED BY THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR)

    (d)  Tests approved for assessment of satisfactory progress by home school students are the two most recent versions of the following tests:

    • Terra Nova
    • Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills
    • Iowa Tests of Basic Skills
    • Metropolitan Achievement Battery
    • Stanford Achievement Test Battery

     

    (e) Homeschool Checklist

Participation Fees

  • Students who participate in the interscholastic athletic program shall pay a participation fee to partially defray the expenses of the athletic programs. Please see below PIL fee statement. 

    All fees must be paid in full by the last day of the season for each sport. Your student will not be permitted to participate in any additional sport with an outstanding balance. If you are unable to meet the final payment date, you must call the school to make payment arrangements.

    PIL: We acknowledge that this is a difficult time for families and we do not want money to ever be a barrier to participation. Participation fees are used to offset
    the expense of coaching stipends. This year, district PIL is offering a few different payment options listed below.

    You may also pay by cash or check in the Bookkeepers Office (8:45-3:30). Make check out to Franklin HS. Write name of athlete and sport on the check. 

    PLEASE NOTE, BALANCE DUE WILL NOT ZERO OUT ON ARBITER/FID AFTER PAYMENT IS MADE. IGNORE THIS BALANCE DUE AFTER YOU HAVE PAID.

Participating in Athletics Requirements

    Attendance

    Students must be in attendance at school for at least one-half of the regular academic school day before they are allowed to practice or compete on that day. Franklin attendance page for your reference.

    Class Requirements

    Students must be on track to graduate. Students must pass 5 classes each semester. Students need to average 6 credits per year for a total of 24 credits to graduate from Franklin. If a student is not on track, then they are ineligible to participate in OSAA athletics and activities.

    Insurance

    Student athletes must have insurance in order to participate in Athletics in Portland Public Schools.   That information will be entered in our registration process through Family ID

    Travel

    All students are required to travel to and from all contests in school-sanctioned vehicles. Deviations from the above require prior approval of the Athletic Director.
